Celebs as Designers? | 10/17/07 13:10 PM

Everywhere I look there are celebrities turing up as designers, either with their own line or a special limited edition collection at a chain and/or label. Some are cute, some are so-so and then there are the ones that are just BAD. What do you think: should celebs keep their day job, or do you think these lines are a good thing? Also tell me your faves. I'm loving Penelope and Monica Cruz for Mango!

It scares me a little the see how Jessica-Simpsony our countrty has become. Not only are celebrities all over the tabloids, television screens, and doing promotions, but why, why ,why do they have to step over their celebrity boundry and enter the designer world when obviously the majority of them have no such talents. I think celebrities use this as a way to market themselves. The first celebrity to do this most likely did well, but we've seen it from everyone by now. What's next? I'm unfazed by the "celebrity designer" threat to the fashion industry because the customer who is really interested in fashion is sophisticated and would take a Marc Jacobs over a Jessica Simpson everytime. However, the few celebrity lines I'm interested in seeing are Kate Moss's TopShop and Sarah Jessica Parker's new line Bitten.

I agree that it is a little unnerving how celebs manage to dabble in everything now, but I'm not too concerned. I think that lines by celebrities and actual designers attract very different clients. Those who are conscious of the fashion industry will keep shopping where the talent is, no matter how much we are bombarded with the celebs. I tried to shop SJP's Bitten this summer, and I was really unimpressed. It was incredibly bland. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but the clothes were not nearly as fabulous as SJP herself. The only thing I bought were a pair of black flip flops... because how can those go wrong? Mblem by Mandy Moore looks like it has some cute pieces though.

I would have to agree, rather than dabbling in everything think celebs should just stick to acting/singing and maybe model for fashion houses instead of trying to head up their own fashion house. I too was disappointed by Bitten, I know it is at S & B and is supposed to be affordable for everyone but you cannot attach your name to such low quality clothing. Especially being the fashionista icon that SJP is. From Manolo's to $20 pea coats...really???Finally has anyone seen the new Macy's ad? It's hilarious, I dont know what they are trying to accomplish with all of those celebs....

Let's face it: it's all about money. I can't imagine that all these women are just DYING to be fashion designers. It's simply a way for them to leverage their names for money without having to do much more than look over someone else's sketches and say, "looks good, I'll put my name on it". Actually the whole thing BUGS me! Leave the fashion design business to the people who slaved away in fashion school, paid their dues and made it because they are talented in fashion design.

I do AGREE! People like me are designers trying to create something meaningful for people and make this world a better and more fashion concious place. Celebs that become designers are for me a BIG NO NO. The problem is that people buy the whole thing and they buy what they put out in the market,,,too sad.
