Ehud Barleve works exclusively with the pure forms of precious metals. Using only 24K gold and pure silver, his designs reflect a natural fluidity that brings about the most glorifying qualities of the metals. Inspired by the landscapes of the Mediterranean shores, each piece is a unique shape and texture, a vivid statement of elegance and sophistication.
Ehud Barleve grew up on a kibbutz in Northern Israel. Born into a metalworking family, he was familiar with the tools and processes of forging and shaping metals from a young age. Like his father, Ehud was artistic. Before beginning college in Tel Aviv, he had decided to become an artist. For several years he studied oil painting and drawing.
Ehud is an artisan with strong spirituality and a love of nature. He brings to his work his personal interpretation of landscapes and colors of the Mediterranean shores and hills.
Out of respect for the environment, Ehud uses eco gold or recycled gold that has been reclaimed and re-purified. By using eco gold, he avoids supporting gold mining which is highly detrimental to the earth.
Ehud’s use of pure gold and silver has both esthetic and environmental aspects. Pure gold, or 24K gold, has its own light and depth. No other substances, or alloys, are added. When alloys are added, the gold loses some of its vividness. As for the environmental aspect, pure gold does not have to be washed with acid, a process that releases toxins into the air. Only water, another pure substance, is needed for cooling and cleaning. With 18K gold, on the other hand, the heating process brings out a black or charcoal discoloration, and most jewelers use acid to eliminate this tarnish and restore vividness.
Although Ehud prefers working in 24K gold, he sometimes uses 22K to create pieces that are lighter in weight and stronger. He has also developed a unique process for making some pieces hollow, and thereby lighter. Each piece of jewelry represents deep personal expression. The pieces are all hand made, crafted out of 24K gold.
