H.L. Hood, a family owned retail-clothing store, is nearing 25 years in business. The upscale women’s clothing store was established in 1982 and opened March 1983 by Heather Hood. She is a University of Alabama graduate in clothing design and costuming with postgraduate study in Paris. Jo Hood, her brother, also a University of Alabama graduate with degrees in English and Philosophy, became a partner in the business in 1984.

The original store was 350 square feet, and located Gulf Shores. The business is now located at SanRoc Cay and boasts a total of 9000 square feet. The store occupies the entire upstairs of one building at SanRoc and one space on the courtyard level. The upstairs showcases better priced women’s clothing, shoes and accessories. Featured designers are CP Shades, Johnny Was, Russ Berens, Alberto Makali, In The Wash, and DKNY.

The mix is constantly changing according to what the buyers find interesting while shopping wholesale markets in New York, Atlanta and Miami. In addition to women’s clothing, the store has a full service shoe department with such notable names as Donald Pliner, Cole Haan, A Marinelli, Born, and Matisse. Downstairs on the courtyard level at SanRoc is the entrance to the swimwear store that often has customers standing in line to try on swimwear by Anne Cole, La Blanca, Gottex, Sunsets, DNKY, and Calvin Klein to name a few.

An additional swimwear store called H2O will be opening at The Wharf in the Spring 2007. The new location will enable the swim wear division to expand to meet the great demand for quality, fun, stylish swim wear while still offering individual customer service. In this competitive industry with never ending chains and big box retailers and discounters, H.L. Hood prides itself on offering stylish, upscale, quality merchandise and top notch sales associates that are knowledgeable helpful and fun.
